Hillel The Elder

In the same Newsweek I read, the name Hillel was mentioned. A quick search yield a Wiki entry. How come I have not heard of the name? The few things I read about him/her, most probably him makes me want to salute him.

This is one of his famous quote :-

"Golden Rule": "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."

Of course the ultimate famous one is this one :-

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am 'I'? And if not now, when?"

I am still trying to understand the above, one first reading, I thought I understood but on second reading, the first meaning got lost along the way.

I thought it was similar to compassionate Vow from Dayuan Dizang Pusa. His greatest compassionate Vow being: "If I do not go to the hell to help the suffering beings there, who else will go? ... if the hells are not empty I will not become a Buddha. Only when all living beings have been saved, will I attain Bodhi." It is often quoted in Hong Kong series, sounding like this, "Ngo pat yap tei yok, sui yan yap tei yok."

With wikipedia, I managed to read up some teachings and all teaches goodness, so, how can any religion be inferior to one another when all advocates the same thing, to do good and hold no malice???
